Review: Weird, gripping and funny. Us hits almost all the horror movie tropes, yet it gives itself some air to breathe with many lighthearted and comedic moments. While the excessive violence and the gore we have come to expect from a horror movie are not missing in Us, it relies on helplessness and claustrophobia to create true fear. Jordan Peele uses the doppelgänger motif in a new and unexpected way; the person that threatens you and your family is you. He uses traditional storytelling with new unique elements, to create an old-school horror film. As far as the acting is concerned, the cast does a brilliant job. Ηowever, Lupita Nyong’o dominates every scene she is in. One criticism one might hold against Us is that, in terms of subject matter, what it’s trying to say gets a little lost in translation. Regardless, it is still a very enjoyable experience.
