The Devil All the Time (2020)
A disturbing religious thriller with Tom Holland leading the cast! He was better than Robert Patisson who thought it was a cowboy movie and at the same level as the psychopath Jason Clarke! It’s an interesting plot about religion, a thing that can drive you crazy. Sinister characters evolve around a young man who wants to protect his beloved ones from corruption and death. A series of events connect all the main characters into a dark scary story. None is good inside! Netflix was really original with this!
Gerald’s Game (2017)
One of the best Stephen King’s books, Gerald’s Game is a huge psychological thriller that drills into our minds and our soul. A ‘light’ story about a couple trying to spice up their marriage in a remote lake house. After the husband dies unexpectedly, the wife is left handcuffed to their bed frame and must fight to survive and break free. Here you can put yourself inside the movie and be the star. Feel the scare, the survival threat, the emptiness, the horror, the depth of human nature, and the depth of our brains. I strongly recommend this one! It is simple, it is well directed and worth your time!
Internet doesn’t categorize it as a thriller but I am! A simple yet proud farmer in the year 1922 conspires to murder his wife for financial gain, convincing his teenage son to assist. But their actions have unintended consequences. I mean come on it’s a family thriller and a drama and pretty much everything… It’s not like the other, won’t take you off your seat but if you can watch it with your kids, I Believe it is quite strong and will leave you a dark taste. Netflix Thrillers not at its best but with a remarkable performance by Thomas Jane.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
I don’t know why this is called mystery/romance/fantasy but not a thriller in IMDb. This probably one of the best movies ever that dared to be multidimensional and succeeded. It is a dark and dramatic thriller about the past, the present the reality and the alternate reality, the one that could have been. A stunning performance from Tom Cruise with his friend Cameron Crowe in directing after their last duo in Jerry Maguire (1996) next to an amazing cast with Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and Kurt Russell.
The Invitation (2015)
A man accepts an invitation to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife. There, things get out of hand… There is something about this thriller that makes people adore it for its simplicity. I believe it’s the domestic element, the fact that it takes place at home and it’s oddly realistic. The buildup, the paranoia, the character-structuring, the heavy atmosphere all escalates to a worthy thriller. It’s not easy to follow and succeed in this recipe but I believe it is even better than slasher bloody movies, quality speaking.
I am a lifetime movie addict and cinema is my passion. I’ve been a movie writer for 8 years. My goal is to teach people how to watch movies and how to appreciate them instead of hating them. Some gems are hidden out there but I’m here to show you them all!
