If you are a mystery junkie like me, or you wanted to be a detective when you were growing up, these are Netflix Original Series/ TV-Shows for you!
This show is about the revolutionary tactic of detectives in the 70’s, which is the analysis of the serial killer’s psychological profile. The theme is a real story but the characters are fictional. Two detectives, Holden Ford and Bill Tench operate the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. They travel all over the USA to visit death-sentenced serial killers like Ed Kemper and Charles Manson and interview them about their past and the reasons behind their crimes. Then they go back to their headquarters and along with psychologist Wendy Carr, they analyze these behaviors. Their goal is to find out how a serial killer thinks so they can solve ongoing cases. The show came to life when actress Charlize Theron gave to director David Fincher the book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit in 2009. In 2016 Netflix announced the production of the series. Although the show lasted only for 2 seasons, it is still a well-structured crime thriller that a lot of viewers appreciate watching.
The Alienist (2018-2020)
The “alienist” is an alternate word for “psychiatrist”. The show is placed in the year 1896, where psychiatrists didn’t work for police and cases of murder, so the protagonist dr. Laslo Kreizler called himself “alienist” because the murderers were alienated from their human nature and did horrific crimes. In this show we watch dr. Kreizler solves one case at a season with the help of a journalist, John Moore, and police secretary Sara Howard. Along with them are twin brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson, both detective sergeants in New York City Police Department. In the first season, the lead characters are facing a pedophile murderer who kills underage prostitute boys. In the second season, they are trying to find a kidnapper who abducts babies, and then kills them before they grow older. This show has a very interesting plot and simultaneously presents issues like women’s rights (second season). We hope that there will be a third season, even more, because the second one was announced after more than a year after the end of the first season.
The Sinner (2017-2020)
The lead character here is detective Harry Ambrose and in every season he has to solve a mysterious case about innocent people who commit serious crimes of murder. In the first season, a woman goes to the beach with her family and kills in cold blood a stranger in front of hundreds of witnesses. In the second season, an underage child murders a young couple that took care of him and they were traveling together and in the third season, Ambrose investigates a fatal car accident. The interesting thing about this show is that from the first episode you can’t possibly guess what happened! As the plot builds around the cases we end up in a solution that there’s no way our minds could go there from the start. I recommend you to watch this show if you love plot twists and complicated mysteries.
Unbelievable (TV-mini series, 2019)
Unbelievable is a dramatization of the 2008-2011 Wahington and Colorado serial rape cases and follows the lead character, Marie, who is charged with accusations of lying for her being raped by some stranger who broke into her apartment. This is a real story of a rape victim that nobody believed her sayings because she was confused and afraid. In the series, Marie is a troubled teenager who was fostered until her adulthood and now is taking part in a social services program for troubled teens in Wahington. One night, as she was sleeping in her apartment, a strange man broke in and raped her. Terrified she called for help from her former foster mother. The police investigate the crime scene and ask her about what happened again and again. Because they can’t find much evidence they start to doubt Marie’s sayings. That and with her first foster mother saying that Marie is an “attention seeker”, the police decide to close her case. Three years after the incident, in Colorado, detective Karen Duvall follows a report for rape. The victim reports that the rapist has a birthmark on his calf. The same man hits another 2 times and by that time, detective Duvall starts a partnership with another detective, Grace Rasmussen. They both find out that the police are lacking information between states and there are six other reports of sexual assaults that match the first Duvall’s case. This story is the tragic truth of the American system, which in 2008 didn’t protect good enough the victims of rape, especially women that they are called “troubled”. The show is very informative and has a women’s power concept that will make you feel a little better than the tragic events.
